In many cultures and countries, there is one day in the year when children receive special presents. In most regions of Spain, Epiphany (January 6th) is traditionally that day. In Germany, Britain and the U.S., the important days are Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (December 24th and 25th). Both Epiphany and Christmas are well-known. Saint Nicholas, in contrast, is quite unknown outside the regions and countries where his name day (December 6th) is celebrated with gifts for children.
In his interactive presentation, Harry Rijnen explains the tradition of the celebration of Saint Nicholas Day in his native The Netherlands. During his talk, he explains the recent controversies regarding some aspects of this festivity. At the same time, he invites his audience to describe when and how children receive their big presents in their own region or country of origin.
This presentation is especially suited for the months of November, December and January. It is aimed at adults and youngsters aged 14 or older.
